3rd November
1999: Andrew Bennett
On November 3rd,
members and guests enjoyed an illustrated talk entitled Masai Mara -
The Real Africa. Andrew Bennett, from Saxmundham, showed us some
very good slides taken on his African safari. These ranged from very
large animals, like elephants and giraffes, down to small African
birds, such as the oxpecker and kingfisher. Andrew also brought
along the photographic equipment that he used on his trip, including
the long lens which enabled him to get some super, close-up shots of
sleeping lions and hunting cheetahs. We shall be having our Grand
Auction on November 17th. so come along, bring and buy, and join in
the fun at the Clyffe Leisure Centre at 7-30 p.m. The Lowestoft
Photographic Society's ANNUAL EXHIBITION can be seen at the Central
Library until Saturday 20th November. Do go to see it. If you enjoy
the pictures, why not come to our meetings at the Clyffe on
Wednesday evenings.
10th November
1999: Gallery
On November
10th, we had a very successful Gallery evening, when seven different
members presented a selection of their work. Slides made up the main
part of the evening and Alan Beaumont started with some fine shots
of American Century fighter aircraft, many of which were taken in
America at the museum in Arizona. Our President, David Standley,
then took us to Thailand where we saw examples of local people,
customs and architecture, including Buddhist temples. Philip Vallis
also took us abroad - to Russia, for sumptuous architecture and
interiors, Tenerife and Hong Kong before returning to England in
Autumn. David Smith brought us back to Suffolk (mainly) to show his
interest in railways, power-boat racing and some contemporary
architecture. Norman Rimmel has an interest in Atlantic islands and
our next stop was the fascinating island of St. Helena. This was
followed by Ascension Island and Iceland. Norman's commentary was
very informative. After this, it was time for the printers and we
had a thorough insight into what is involved in an A-Level
photography course from Roger Preston, finishing with his final
3-dimensional exam piece. Lastly, Derek Jackson showed us the
fifteen prints of Dutch architecture and canal scenes that he
submitted for his A.R.P.S. We all enjoyed the good quality of the
photography and the diversity of subject and location. Why not join
us at the Clyffe Leisure Centre on November 24th. at 7-30p.m. for
Northern Thailand - an illustrated talk.

Members present
at the Clyffe Leisure Centre on Wednesday, March 8 were treated to
an excellent presentation of natural history slides. Roger Hance,
F.R.P.S., A.F.I.A.P., BPE5, showed us 200 superb shots, ranging from
tiny fungi to adult foxes. We saw moths and butterflies, wild
flowers and many birds, including small waders at Pensthorpe and
large grouse in the Peak District. Not only did we enjoy the quality
of the photography, we were shown the equipment Roger used and the
techniques involved in producing such images. Apart from being
enjoyable, it was a very informative and helpful evening thoroughly
appreciated by all who attended. Don't forget the second half of our
last Quarterly Competition on March 22nd.
24th May 2000:
Inaugural LPC Meeting
On May 24th, the
Lowestoft Photographic Club came into being and the inaugural
meeting was opened by Chairman, Trevor Cox, who read a letter of
welcome from our President, Sydney Reynolds. Joint Chairman, Norman
Laughland, then officially inaugurated the Club and Secretary, Frank
Blyth, reported that the E.A.F. had been notified and about 100
programmes had been sent out. Treasurer, Derek Leak, reported on the
finances of the new Club and acknowledged another generous donation
from our benefactor, Pamela Graystone. Norman Laughland then
introduced the members of the committee and grateful thanks were
extended to Andy Birch and Alan Hale for doing so much of the
groundwork to enable the amalgamation to take place so smoothly.
Mark, from Chadd’s Mini-Lab, FotoStop, was also present to wish us
success and generously donated films and discount cards to all
members. The evening continued with a short presentation of work by
each committee member as a way of introducing themselves and their
particular photographic interests. The main season is over but there
are several summer events to look forward to. There will be reunion
meetings of an informal nature throughout the break and the first on
June 14th is the final date for submitting prints for the Annual
Exhibition. The other reunion dates are July 12th and August 16th.
On June 14th John Russell will also bring along a list of walks that
he has organised. They will be published in the Journal in due
course. There is a competition to design a logo for the new Club so
get your brains into gear and come up with something dynamic, but
not too elaborate, by February 28th 2001.
